BIO

Artist Statement
To create art, it became necessary for me to “get free” from the literal and embrace the unexpected. To experiment with any materials that the art may demand and to accomplish this without compromising the quality of the work. For many years I have explored the tension and harmonies between abstraction and realism in a variety of media. Perhaps I use these presumed contradictions to fuel my creative response to relationships with our natural world and with each other. By using symbolic natural images among an opus of shapes, lines and colors I try not to simply reproduce these objects and their environment but to respond to the inner reaction they evoke.

The degree to which abstraction shares the focus of each painting is controlled by my inclination to experiment with color, texture and movement. And for me, the contrasting styles allow me to take advantage of my technical skills and the freedom to follow my intuition.

-Andrea Huppert

Biography
A native of Baltimore born in 1948, Ms. Huppert has studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art, The Towson Fine Art School, Harford Community College and independently with a variety of professional instructors.

She began working traditionally in oils but eventually changed her focus to watercolor. Ms. Huppert began exhibiting her watercolors professionally in 1984 and continued to do so for twelve years. During this time she gained acceptance into many juried competitions and has won numerous awards. She was an active member of several watercolor societies and helped establish and run a cooperative gallery in Baltimore for four years.

In 1996 she began to destroy and re-purpose unresolved watercolor and acrylic paintings adding layers of collage. These collages evolved into wall-hung dioramas incorporating painted papers and fabric, found objects and small sculptural elements. The focus of her work was mainly nature and figures often portrayed in ambiguous ways which she continued to explore until 2003.

After an extended exhibition hiatus, she resumed two-dimensional painting in 2008 working primarily in acrylic enhanced with mixed media. This body of work was on exhibit at Fleckenstein Gallery in Baltimore for five years.

Ms. Huppert is currently painting in encaustic. Energized by the unpredictability and luminosity of this new medium she continues her artistic evolution.
